Antonis Samarakis-Hope Wanted (Ζητείται Ελπίς)

Antonis Samarakis (1919-2003) was one of the most prominent writers of post-war Greek literature. Known for his dark and often pessimistic style, which often expressed his concern about his country’s youth, Samarakis produced fine samples of Greek literature.

Greek verbs in -λαμβάνω

Below are some of the most commonly used verbs which end in -λαμβάνω. There are more out there but they do not feature very much in day-to-day speak.
Ρήματα σε –λαμβάνω

Αναλαμβάνω =  δέχομαι κάτι ως υποχρέωση (π.χ. Ανέλαβα την υποχρέωση να οργανώση τη δεξίωση)

Απολαμβάνω = ωφελούμαι, κερδίζω | ευχαριστιέμαι (π.χ. Απολαμβάνω τους καρπούς της σκληρής μου δουλειάς)

Εκλαμβάνω = αντιλαμβάνομαι, εννοώ κατά κάποιο τρόπο (π.χ. Αυτό το εκλαμβάνω ώς προσβολή)

Επιλαμβάνομαι = καταπιάνομαι με κάτι (π.χ. Επιλαμβάνομαι της υπόθεσης προσωπικά)

Καταλαμβάνω = κυριεύω με δυναμικά μέσα | προφταίνω, πιάνω κάποιον να κάνει κάτι, ιδ. κακό | (για τόπους) κατέχω έκταση | (π.χ. Ο στρατός κατέλαβε το ύψωμα)

Λαμβάνω = παίρνω στα χέρια μου | δέχομαι κάτι, παραλαβαίνω (π.χ. Λαμβάνω υπ’όψη μου όλα τα στοιχεία)

Παραλαμβάνω = παίρνω στα χέρια μου | δέχομαι κάτι, παραλαβαίνω (π.χ. Παρέλαβα το πακέτο σήμερα)

Προσλαμβάνω = παίρνω κάποιον στην υπηρεσία μου | περιβάλλομαι κάποια μορφή, αποκτώ ιδιότητα ή χαρακτηριστικό που δεν είχα ως τώρα (π.χ. η πόλη προσέλαβε πανηγυρική όψη – οι αναφορές προσλαμβάνουν χαρακτήρα σαφέστατα ελεγκτικό)

Nexus Radio-an internet gateway to world radio stations

Nexus radio is a very useful tool which allows you to select from hundreds of radio stations and listen to them online on your PC. So, whichever language you want to practise, Nexus can be the solution for you. There are dozens of Greek radio stations, including regional news stations (from Katerini to Leros) which have mixed programmes of music, news and call-ins.

Nexus is completely free to download and install, and absolutely free from viruses or other bugs which may affect your computer. I have been using it for some time without problems. This is how to download and install it:

Step 1: go to the Nexus download page and click the ‘Download’ button

 

Step 2: When prompted, select ‘Save’

Step 3: Save this file in the ‘My Documents’ folder, or in another location of your choice

Step 4: When download completes click on ‘Run’ when prompted. Alternatively, you can go to the location you saved the file (i.e. My Documents) and double click on the ‘nexusradio’ file. If asked whether you want to run this program, just say ‘Run’, it’s safe. Windows just likes to be too careful sometimes.

 

Step 5: Just click ‘next’ and ‘install’ to install Nexus (you need to agree to the terms & conditions as usual). When asked whether you want to install Gisca, you can say no (I recommend saying no) as you don’t need this.

That’s it! You are almost ready. When you run the program for the first time, it asks you to register by bringing up a form. You do not need to put in your real details here as it never checks again.

When you finally open Nexus, you see a station menu by genre. Just click on the genre you want and see the list of stations available. Enjoy! Drop me an email if you have a problem.

How to set up your keyboard for Greek (Windows)

You don’t need to install additional Greek fonts for this.

To set up your keyboard for Greek characters follow this sequence:

Click Start and select ‘Control Panel’

In the new window, double click ‘Regional and Language Options’

In the new window, click on the ‘Languages’ tab and then on ‘Details’

You should see the language(s) your PC is set up for. Click ‘Add’

From the drop down list, select ‘Greek’ and then click on ‘Apply’

Click ‘OK’ and exit all the windows. Now the language bar should appear on your ‘Taskbar’. From there select ‘Greek’. You should now be able to write in Greek. A handy way of changing between Greek and English is by pressing the ‘Alt’ and then the ‘Shift’ buttons. This way you bypass the Language bar. You can do this in all applications, including Internet Explorer of Firefox. This is handy if you want to search the web for a Greek term.

Some handy tips:

Greek question mark is Q. SHIFT+Q makes the :

Letter Θ is U.

Letter Ξ is J

Letter Ω is V

Letter Ψ is C

R is Ρ

And P is Π.

How to add accents: you press the colon/semi colon key BEFORE the letter you want. So ; and then α should make ά. To ad ¨ you press SHIFT and the colon/semi colon key BEFORE your vowel. So SHIFT+;+ι makes ϊ.

Υπάρχει πολύ υλικό ‘out there’ για ελληνική γλώσσα. Η σελίδα Φιλογλωσσία είναι απ’τις καλύτερες που έχω δει μέχρι τώρα, άνκαι δεν φτάνει σε πολύ προχωρημένο επίπεδο.
